Anhui province overview
Anhui is situated in the northwest of East China across the basins of the Yangtze River and the Huaihe River. The name "An Hui" comes from the combination of the first Chinese character of "An Qing" and " Hui Zhou" (two prefectures).  
Most of the provincial rivers and lakes belong to the Yangtze and Huaihe river systems, while some in the southeastern part belong to the Qiantang River basin of Xinanjiang. The Yangtze River flows from southwest to northeast, and its major tributaries are The largest lake of the Province is Chaohu Lake situated in the central area, with an area of 800 square kilometers. The little Laoshan Island in the lake is one of the provincial scenic spots.  
The first developed agricultural area is to the north of Jianghuai ( the Yangtze River and the Huaihe River). However, from 1194 when the Yellow River changed its course, intruded into the Huaihe River and silted up the passage to the sea, the agricultural  
The major provincial minerals are coal and iron. The coal field extends from Guzhen in the east to Yingshang in the west and from Huainan in the south to Xisoxian in the north. This is a vast area and its reserves come out first in East China.  
Hefei as the provincial capital of Anhui, this industrial city of 1.3 million has few attractions for the tourist but sees a constant flow of business travelers. Hefei is also home to the University of Science and Technology, where Chinese dissident Fang Lizhi was vice-president until he sought asylum in the West after the 1989 Tianí«an Men Square massacre.
